Since the early part of the 20th century the question has been raised as to whether or not article VI of the Formula of Concord (1577), The Third Use of the Law, actually reflects the theology of Martin Luther (1483-1546). Theologians of note who have rejected this idea include Werner Elert(1885-1954) , Paul Althaus (1888-1966), Gerhard Forde (1927-2005) and Steven Paulson. Holger Sonntag, chiefly on the basis of his first-ever translation of Luther's Antinomian Theses and Disputations into English, demonstrates that such a rejection is not warranted; that FC VI clearly reflects Luther's understanding of the law of God and its application in the Christian life.
